One of the guests of the opening ceremony of the 13th International Association for Ambulatory Surgery Congress (IAAS) was Prof. Raquel Duarte. In the Secretary of State of Health’s perspective, “Ambulatory Surgery is definitely the future of Surgery”, since it presents “obvious clinical advantages”. Besides the “less infectious diseases and the much quicker recovery”, “there’s also an “increase of the efficiency of the whole system”. Watch the video of the interview.
Given all its proven benefits, there has been a remarkable investment in Ambulatory Surgery in Portugal over the recent years. “The government is really committed to make this work”, admitted Prof. Raquel Duarte.
“I must say that the work that has been done in Portugal between the surgeons and the Ministry [of Health] is very important and should be seen as an example”, she concludes. Nowadays, a total of two in every three surgeries are performed in ambulatory, on a national level.
